You’ll come across packs of machines in the early game that will take you out if you don’t sneak around, or run away as fast as you can. Sure, you can set up traps, and slowly chip away at the various armour plates that each machine features, but they hit incredibly hard, and this adds to the sense of hostility you face in the Forbidden West. “There were multiple times that we came across a machine from the first game, full of the confidence of late-game Zero Dawn Aloy and thinking we’d easily rip it apart, only for it to send us back to the nearest campfire.” While Horizon Forbidden West is every bit a modern open-world game, instead of absolutely littering the map with enemy bases (although there are still a few), there’s a much larger focus on the game’s massive list of enemy creatures to take down.įavourites from the original game return, such as the iconic Thunderjaw, but there’s a whole new batch of beasts, as well as variations of old ones for you to hunt, and Forbidden West does a great job of making these creatures feel genuinely scary. This is a game where you’ll call someone in from the other room and show them it to demonstrate how good games look these days. The facial animation in Horizon Forbidden West is nothing short of industry-leading, standing toe-to-toe with Sony stablemate Naughty Dog in terms of realism. If you haven’t played the original, or have simply forgotten its plot in the five years since its release, there’s an excellent recap at the start of the game, meaning players that didn’t even pick up the first game can be right up to speed.īurch isn’t the only triumph – the entire cast of supporting characters and their performances are stronger in Horizon Forbidden West, aided by incredible performance capture which allows for performances with plenty of nuance and depth. Horizon Forbidden West picks up right after the end of the first game. With better combat, a compelling story and a jaw-droppingly beautiful world, it’s an improvement on the original in every way, even if it does hold on to a few open-world tropes that we could have left behind. While Horizon Forbidden West just falls short of replacing Assassin’s Creed 2 in this analogy, it gets very close. The jump from the first Assassin’s Creed to its sequel perfectly represents what a studio can do once it’s found its feet with the first instalment of a franchise – expanding on what worked, listening to what its players didn’t like, and taking advantage of not having to learn to walk at the same time. While it may seem hopeless to have these larger-than-life threats pile up once more, Aloy will overcome them - only this time, she has a group of trusted companions to fight alongside her, and allies who will undoubtedly come to her aid in this ultimate fight. When it comes to sequels that are significantly better than the original, a game that often comes to mind is Assassin’s Creed 2. Nemesis is on the way and Hephaestus is back out in the world - there will be a lot to figure out, to say the least. We can only imagine what we will be up against in an upcoming game. Not only this, but Hephaestus is free once more and will likely make the biggest and deadliest machines yet. Whether we'll get to venture into space as part of the next game remains yet to be seen. A rogue AI made up of collective minds fueled by nothing but hate. There is no idea what to expect when it arrives, as it is unlike anything Aloy or Earth has faced before. Nemesis is out to wipe out all life on Earth, and will arrive soon. With the plot being left on the group asking for help against the next - and biggest yet - threat to Earth, we can expect another Horizon game to pick up where Forbidden West left off. She refuses, and Sylens begins to board the ship. He plans to board the Zenith ship and leave Earth behind, and asks Aloy to come along too. Aloy refuses, and Tilda becomes hostile, attacking Aloy with her advanced mech - Specter Prime.Īloy defeats Tilda, and Sylens enters - who has known of Nemesis and the coming threat for quite some time. Tilda demands Aloy join her escape from Earth and leave Nemesis to wipe out the planet as they escape with GAIA. She recalls her love for Elisabet, and tells Aloy that she is the best version of her, and that she will not lose her again. The Zenith survivors ran from Nemesis and headed to Earth to grab GAIA, so that they could continue running and make their perfect world once Nemesis had stopped following them.Īfter Aloy and Beta have learned of Nemesis, Gerard and Tilda enter the room - Tilda quickly kills Gerard, before speaking to Aloy and Beta. Nemesis is also what sent the signal to wake Hades, causing the events of the first game and leading GAIA to create Aloy and destroy herself shortly after.
